Vanilla v1 is released.

Nice one :) I only started looking at it again the other day and was reminded of how elegant it is.. haven't tried to install it yet tho :D

the best thing about the new version is the templating system.

should be easy to configure the forum for use in most circumstances now.

just need the community around it to build and for more extensions to be written.

It looks nice - but wouldn't it be redundant when a forum gets over a certain size? That is, topics will fall off the 'discussions' page within a couple of seconds etc

Or is this my bad? Anybody got a link to a working Vanilla forum?

There's a "Categories" tab so I'm guessing that's the different subforums :)

It looks like the page they're showing most appears to be the homepage - "all discussions" - sort of like vB 3.5 which will show "all new posts" and then underneath that "all unread posts ordered by date" (depending on which setting you, er, set it to iirc)

Looks neat :)

http://lussumo.com/community/ :)

I've been using a beta of vanilla for a while now with mysql. Perhaps it's time I upgraded now that it has finally hit release :p

I had a phpBB forum set up for my friends to chat on, I decided a while ago to dump that and get Vanilla. Installed it yesterday and it is so much better than phpBB. There arn't any many admin options for users like there is with vB, but there might be an add-on/exstension for that.

It's certainly a lot easier to install and get to grips with than phpBB. Infact, I might say it's easier to install than WordPress. ;)

Overall I think it's ideal for a small community.

Agreed. It's a lovely piece of software, very elegant and easy to use :)

It's great for a small community, although it's certainly not like most forums, and lacks some of the functionality of the more mainstream boards such as PunBB, phpBB etc.

I tried it when it first came out and got annoyed at the terrible plugin system, has it improved?
I havn't used it before this version so I can't really compare it that well. Installing them is extremly easy. Upload the plugin folder to the extension folder and then activate it in the Vanilla exstensions panel. Done.

I havn't got a clue how difficult it is to develop the extensions for it though, sorry.

Yeah I meant development sorry. It was unnecessarily complex IIRC and had stupid limitations, like not being able to filter output in all cases (only being able to choose certain filters when posting, like HTML/BBCode etc) and not being able to modify/chain output filters.

Perhaps I've just been spoiled by WordPress.
