So my current setup is;

i7 2600k @4Ghz
16GB 2133 ram
Twin Frzr II GTX 580
PCIe 2.0 mobo

I only game at 1080p and that isn't likely to change for a long time.

I'm looking at upgrading my GPU in a few weeks because the fans on my GTX 580 have died and it seems to be getting sluggish.

Atm I'm either going for 290 or 290X vapor-X cards I've looked a bunch of reviews but it's hard to gauge the % increase of the 290x over the 290 because all the reviewers have different test setups, so if anyone knows that would be nice :)? Also it's case of how much is enough for 1080p? With the increasing number of 1440p+ setups I would imagine eventually you won't need a top tier card for 1080p.

Anyway thanks :).

The difference in performance between a 290 and a 290X will be somewhere in the region of 6-10%.

If you're going to add another card at a later date id go for a 290. If you just want a single card then id go for the 290X and clock it up. The vapour X's are really nice cards so you can't go wrong either way.

What about the 290 you just sold owen? How many 290's have you got? Are you stock piling them for the winter? :p

LOL, that was left over from my old (3 months ago) 290X Crossfire setup. I went down to 1 when I built a mITX system but it failed to satisfy my lust for power :D

Saw a pair of 290s fs for £400 and took my opportunity to increase, and in the meantime decided to keep my ZR30w ;) :D

R9 290 like the rest said would more than enough for 1080p. The GTX 580 might seem to be getting sluggish because it might be throttling from overheating? If you want to you could fix the cooler with a Gelid Icy Vision for £30, just a thought at least :)

I find a Vapor-X 290 is also ok at 1440P to be honest.

But my main gaming screen is a 144HZ 1080P screen and as said it never struggles.
