Hi Guys,

Got a bit of a weird but very annoying set of problem here. I've got an AMD 280x with latest cats connected to an Onkyo Amp via HDMI which is hooked up to 50" 1080p plasma. The main use of this computer is XBMC with RDP access throughout the day and some gaming using a PS3 controller.

One of the problems I have is that the PC will frequently not output any sound via HDMI when I go to log onto it locally. If I look at the playback devices it is set to output to the Amp so all looks fine. I'm not sure if the problem is the 280x not outputting the sound properly or the amp having problems. I listen to music through RDP so I'm not sure if that is also possibly causing issues? If I reboot the PC the sound returns to normal. Turning the amp on and off does not do anything.

The second annoying problem is that on occasion the picture at home will be overscanned. I'm not sure if my constant RDP causes this. I don't know why it does this as my monitor at work is 1080p and my TV at home is 1080p. When it does overscan I don't have any scaling options as the entry is hidden under the "My Digital Flat-Panels node. A restart will cure this issue.

Lastly, the picture and sound will cut out on occasion when using the PC locally and then return. It does it at random but can do it every 5 minutes or so. It is usually interrupted for a few seconds. I have also noticed that sometimes the picture will return but not the sound. Turning the amp on and off normally cures this. The PS4 also does this but the Virgin Media TIVO box does not.

I'm debating replacing the 280x with a 970 G1 so not sure if that would help as it could be a driver issue? Was also thinking it might be a cable issue?

Considered running HDMI straight to the TV, and a second cable straight to the AV unit for audio only?

I have an Onkyo TX-NR636 and it can do similar things with the picture cutting out while it negotiates the proper resolution and such. It adds nothing to the display side, so I cut it out of that loop.

Yes. I don't know what outputs your card has, but you may need a displayport to HDMI adapter to make up the numbers.
