Various graphics cards...

Due to a hard drive error I've recently had to re-install Windows 7 onto a fresh SSD, and now I'm having problems with graphics (maybe this caused the original HD error? who knows...)

The AMD Radeon 7850 I originally had will not perform. It's as if it's not recognised as even being there. I'm left with a "Standard VGA adapter" in device manager and the resolutions are terrible. The CCC software and drivers will not install either (black screen upon restart). I need safe mode to system restore. I've tried everything with this card, over the course of a fortnight. Google is exhausted.

Today I've nicked an NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT from another machine and the problems are just the same. Terrible selection of resolutions. Device manager just shows a "Video controller".

Presumably each graphics card is in fine working condition and the problem lies elsewhere. Motherboard?

Try a different PCI-E slot.

If driver installation fails with both cards they're either both faulty, or the motherboard is.
