Hi, I got some parts recently from OCUK, and I've been having some issues with, well all of them to varying extents, here is the list of components

- GTX 780 GHz edition
- Corsair TX 650 psu
- Western Digital black 2TB

The 780 didn't fit my Antec 300 case, it hit the drive bay enclosure by 2mm,
so I had to modify the fan shroud, originally planned to remove it and cut the corner off, but it turned out that you needed to remove the heatsink to get the last screw out, so I ended up cutting it with wire cutters as a last resort, luckily that worked and the card is fine so that issue is solved. I had a 670 with the windforce version 1 cooler, which is very similar, so I assumed the length would be the same and didn't check.

The psu seems to work fine and it is usually quiet, the issue with it seems to be a design flaw, when the power draw / temperature is low enough the fan spins down and stops moving, I think this causes a high speed tapping noise, similar to if a wire is touching a fan. It isn't that loud but you do notice it occasionally, even with noise reducing earphones. This would be fine if it turned on while gaming and switched off afterwards, but it spins down then turns on again 10 seconds later when using something like Heaven benchmark. I have the CX 500, which doesn't produce this noise, the TX is supposed to be a better quality product which is why I got it over the CX 750. I can possibly just get used to this sound.

Lastly the WD Black hard drive, when I started the computer up after installing everything, I could immediately hear this loud, low pitched noise, which was unlike anything I'd heard before from a pc, I wondered if it was a problem with the psu or graphics card, but its this hard drive, I don't know if its supposed to be like this or not, it also causes strong vibrations in the table that the pc is on, when there is usually no vibration, the only thing that I have had that caused as much vibration was a large diameter top fan which was part of the Antec 300 case. Is this normal for the WD Blacks ? They are supposed to be the best hard drive you can get ?

WD Blacks are their performance hard drives. Performance requires compromises...

Make sure it is seated correctly, though. Most HDD bays have rubber things (or some mechanism) to counter HDD vibration.

Mine has no rubber things, its more of a standard case rather than these gaming cases that cost over £100.

I thought that these drives were louder because they spin at 7200 rpm or more,
but the hard drive that I already have is a Seagate Barracuda st31000524as which is supposed to be 7200rpm, so I didn't expect it to be much different.

I was thinking about getting the green instead which is supposed to be a quiet storage drive, but I read that it can go into a low power state which causes delay when reading, so I thought if I watching a video from it and I try to seek, then it will maybe take ages to load and the application will freeze for a few seconds. Also people said it was potentially less reliable than the black.

It seems two of you problems could have been solved by buying a better case :)

Send the PSU back under DSR and get something else while you can (assuming it's withing the DSR period).
