Varrying Temps

I have recently put my first computer together and its all going great....however....

The temp reading in the BIOS is worryingly high. It gets up to 60c! The strange thing is that SpeedFan has idle temps around 35c.

I have a E4300 on a Gigabyte DS3 and am using the stock cooler.

No overclock.

When i apply slight pressure to a specific corner of the heatsink the temps in the BIOS can go down to 30c, suggesting its not seated properly. I have attempted to reseat several times with the same result each time.

Another odd thing is when the case is on its side the BIOS temps are 50c but when i stand it up they can go up sometimes to 70+!!!! Once again this suggests the heatsink is not seated correctly, however the trend is not repeated when using SpeedFan to monitor the temps

I cant get CoreTemp or TAT working not sure if they are compatible with Vista 64????

If the SpeedFan temps are true then its ok, but if the BIOS ones are then something is seriously wrong. Which should i trust?

cheers

Run a third application like Everest. Which ever is odd from the matching pair is the unreliable source. Might me worth checking if there are any BIOS update for your motherboard. It's not uncommon for some motherboards to be reporting incorrect temps.

Have you seated the HSF correctly? What are you using as thermal material? Your best bet is to clean of the TIM provided using a lint free cloth and TIM remover. Then apply a small amount (size of a grain of rice) of AS5 to the center of the CPU, then work gradually around the surface. Re-seat the HSF. Sometimes having too much thermal material has the opposite effect.

Make sure also you have good airflow... coming in from the front and extracting to the rear.
