I currently have a fx8350 and a r9 290, I have the upgrade itch and I'm not sure what will offer more improvement in gaming. I'm aware the fx8350 isn't well thought as a gaming chip, but would would moving to an Intel Skylake CPU really be worth it for gaming alone?

Thank you

I'd honestly wait for AMD Zen at this point, even if it doesn't beat Intel it should bring their prices down. If you've managed this long with an FX8350 another few months isn't going to kill you.

What's your 8350 running at? If stock then a skylake would be a big jump (though in some games you'll be GPU bottlenecked anyway) but if clocked well then a lot less so.

Kaby Lake i7 7700k will be clocked at 4.5 GHz stock, and out in 2 or 3 months. That is a strong choice.

You could also wait for Zen, which if nothing else may make Intel knock £50 off their higher end CPUs.

Thanks for the help guys, it's running at 4.5ghz, I'll wait for Zen and cannon lake and I'll pick up the best available to last me another 4/5 years. I was tempted to get an i5 6600k, but I have now been convinced to hold off.

Thanks

Yes, but totally agree at this point you might as well wait and see what happens. I would go for a new CPU, be it Intel or AMD when KL arrives, and hang onto the 290 for a while.

Not sure what it's like in the UK but 290's go for low money 2nd hand in Ireland, €150 very often (about £125), which is a huge amount of performance per euro.

Considerably the best jump up from a 290 is probably a GTX1070, it's a massive disparity between selling the old card and buying the new!
