I made no errors in my post. Tom0's post profoundly misunderstood VAT. You can reclaim VAT on inputs if you are a VAT registered business - i.e. the only kind of business that would be charging VAT on coffee. A builder who charges you VAT, can reclaim the VAT he claimed on the materials he used.

That there's a number of exemptions and exceptions in the VAT system doesn't change that.

Some can, yes. But not all VAT registered businesses can reclaim VAT on inputs. It really isn't that simple!
