Hey,

I have a 1.2 Corsa 2007 with about 45,000 miles. Had a service last January but have only done about 3-5000 miles since. Therefore I was thinking of just buying a service kit off Ebay for £30 ish. Are these any good or do I really need to spend £130 on a proper service? Also I would need some oil, I think its 5w 30. Whats a good brand?

The kit I was looking at was this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-V...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c77b811f3
comes with genuine Vauxhall parts.

Or this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OIL-AIR-P...|Plat_Gen:D|Cars+Type:1.2&hash=item46178f4078
which has Bosch and Mann parts

Thanks for the help.

Depends how long you're going to keep the car. If you're going to keep it for years and run it into the ground you may as well service it yourself, but if you're going to sell it in a couple of years, you might have difficulty selling it without service history, as there'll be loads of Corsas that have been properly serviced so people will just choose those ones over yours.

I sold a £2.5k Corsa earlier this year within 1 day of the advert going up for full asking price to somebody who said what made it stand out amongst the many, many other Corsas was the fact it had full servce history.

A service on a Corsa is hardly expensive - something to bear in mind.

Chuck your reg into eurocarparts.com & carparts4less

-Check the front pages for 'codes', might be cheaper than ebay

Just get it done at an independent garage. Pick a cheap garage and you're done for probably £50/hr.

Also if spark plugs were done last time then they don't need to be done again. They last far longer than 5000 miles.

Would not buy any car which has been self serviced, to many people thinking there Edd China.

What does a mechanic do that you or I wouldn't? Servicing a car is hardly difficult is it? Then there's the issue that many mechanics are pretty incompetent anyway. I think it depends on the car and the demonstrated knowledge of the owner as to whether I'd buy a self-serviced car.

I did a self service on my EP3 and sold it quickly to the first person who looked at it within a week.

The fact that many professional mechanics can't get me right would give me absolutley nil confidence in somebody who claims they just do it themselves. Many people are very competent - lots of people here - but when buying a car you've no idea how good they are, just that they tried to save money on servicing. No thanks!

You can get a good feel for someone's level of ability just by talking to them about what they've done to the car. I dont generally carry out manufacturer interval servicing on my car outside of oil/filter changes every few k but I simply will not pay someone else to carry out other routine and preventative maintenance that I can and enjoy doing myself to a high standard

Unfortunately if you've never owned and worked on the specific model before then it can be hard to sus out what they have actually done and to what standard ( outside of oil/filter changes). Full manufacturer history definitely widens your pool of buyers and probably increases the likely selling price, servicing at a random tyre and exhaust place is barely any better than home serviced imo - plus its a corsa, it should t be expensive to have done by Vauxhall or a decent Indy
