Looking at buying a new car for the Mrs, she has fell in love with one she drove.. 2.0CDTI.

A quick google seems to bring up they aren't too reliable? Does anyone own one or have owned one?

Whats tge npg like on this model, the spec says 60 combined, achieveable?

You're on the wrong forum to ask about a Vauxhall, everyone seems to hate them here.

The Insignia is a good car. I know 3 people that have them and don't have any complaints, two of them have come from BMW's and prefer then a great deal.

The mondeo she found to be too big, and the cost to buy is higher.

The insignia we looked at was on an 09 plate for 7499, which is within our hudget, merceds/bmw/audi/mondeo of the same year and mileage are not.

I'm not asking for a comparison with any other vehicle.

Well i have been in a Insignia a few times with work. They aint as bad as people make out but people are right about the Mondeo being the better car for a similar price comparison.

I missed a 58+ Titanium X sport 2.5T with 56k miles and 1 owner for £6500. I am sure there is plenty of Mondeo's in the same price range as your budget and number plate needs. Tell her to test drive a Mondeo Titanium X (TX Sport if you can find one in budget).

The mondeo she found to be too big

Insignia hatchback:

Length: 4,830 mm (190.2 in)
Width: 1,856 mm (73.1 in)
Height: 1,498 mm (59.0 in)

Mk4 Mondeo Hatchback:

Length: 4,778 mm (188.1 in)
Width: 1,886 mm (74.3 in)
Height: 1,500 mm (59.1 in)

Oh, so the Insignia is longer and the Mondeo is only 3cm wider and 1cm taller. Silly argument. The Mondeo is better than the Insignia (drives better, higher quality feel to the interior, better ergonomics and more comfortable).

But you asked if it's any good. Naturally it's going to get compared to other vehicles.

We had an insignia in the family for 130k miles from new to 2 yr old

Not bad cars reliability will be fine when compared to other Marques. Just be warned they are not cheap when they do go wrong and those bills will vary wildly depending on where you take it ie faux hall are still quoting £1500+ for a clutch and flywheel although most backstreet places can do it for a lot less

Their heavy on suspension components and the 2l diesel we had was very heavy on brake parts

Oh and it will not do 60mpg anywhere between 45-50 would be a workable average with mainly motorway miles

They aren't bad cars really, tbh they are really rather comparable to the Mondeo ...as you would expect, there isn't a big difference, despite what some people like to think. Personally I feel the Mondeo drives better, the Insignia has a nicer interior design though and in terms of build quality ... there really isn't anything significant in it tbh. The Insignia is a much better car than the old Vectra in every way though.

I have driven many through work. I can't comment on the reliability as I haven't had each one for very long, however the 1.8 petrol is terrible - horribly underpowered. The auto box is fairly ropey and it seems to have a downchange point around 70mph from 6th to 5th which is really irritating on busy motorways as it is constantly trying to rev out in 5th if you try and overtake anything. Beware of the Nav - it does not support postcode lookup.

Other than that if you aren't interested in driving particularly it isn't a *bad* car, although I couldn't get over the bad rear visibility and seemingly impossible way you cannot see exactly where the bonnet finishes.

Oh and the electric seats in the Elite models are really fiddly, and if you have the 'help you get out' feature engaged - it basically pulls the seat back while you are trying to get you out, thereby making it practically impossible to get out, LOL.

EDIT - oh and 60mpg is totally unachievable. I think I was managing mid-40s on the diesel ones on a mostly motorway cycle. Can't remember the petrol ones, but I would stay away from them anyway.

insignia is just as bad as a vectra, just better looking.
At the end of the day it's a vauxhall, so no.

Sorry but an Insignia is WAAAAAAAAAAY better than a Vectra - and I'm a Ford fanboy!

Sister in law's hubby has an Insignia for commuting twice a week between Blackpool and Bristol and it's fine.
