It's obviously been well maintained and serviced etc to get to 225k miles, but i wouldn't be paying £1000 for it.

£500 would be my max offer, and he's doing well to be offered that IMHO.

Surely the fact that it's an auto would devalue it further at such a mileage?

I'm sure that I've read or heard that autos generally don't last as long as manual boxes

Just don't rope your brain in to buying that car. Seriously, it isn't worth anything near a grand. I would practically guarantee that if I bought that car I could destroy it within 20 minutes of buying it.

I bought woman a 2.5 V6 vectra as her last car before the gti and I drove it only once when I was desperate. I did 17 whole miles. It had been fine with her for the year she had it. I broke the brakes, I broke the idling and the auto gearbox didn't sound very healthy after that. I sold it, stating honestly exactly what faults it had after it's encounter with me and sold it for £500 lol

I'd question your driving rather than the components of the vehicle. Howd'ya manage that?

I expected it to be as reliable as my Subaru

. In all fairness it had done 120k miles and darling is pretty gentle on her cars. I have no idea how I killed so many things at once but I think my 'shakedown' simply brought lurking problems to light at once. I didn't hang around in it.
