On top of all the new features in 3.7, beta 5 also introduces "conversations".

Conversation;
a means by which visitor messages posted between two users on each others' profile pages can be viewed in a unified form. Look for the 'View Conversation' link on visitor messages to use the feature.

Yup - friends and visitor messages. There's a few teething problems with permissions which the Admins are having a bit of a struggle to track down.
