I just updated vcenter at one site from version 2.5 to 2.5 update 6. There is currently four NIC in the physical vcenter server. There are two hp teams. One team is labelled management and the other is labelled iscsi.

the management ip:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.20.0.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.20.0.1

the iscsi ip:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.20.3.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

The normal lan
gateway: 10.10.0.253
subnet: 255.255.0.0

I want to enable wan access on the vc server so i can use the update manager. I tried adding the normal gateway as a second nic on to the management network, it worked for a bit but then it stopped working.

At other sites when we have vcenter in a vm we just have one nic and that is all. Based on my limited knowledge. I think the management nic is used for vmotion between hosts thus why it needs to be 2gigabit and on the management range which is specified on the hosts virtual network configuration.

But what is the iscsi nics for and how can i get wan access?

edit: I have decided i am just going to use the proxy settings in the update manager instead. Can't get it too download update signatures, not sure why. i give up.

I don't think there is realy a need for 2gigabit iscsi connection a vcenter server. When you move guests between hosts including storage i think it uses the host to san connectivity only. The only reason why you would need iscsi access on a vcenter server is for management of the iscsi. But I could be wrong about that. I was watching a train signal course on vmware and it did say it is good for vcenter to be on the management subnet because it has certain advantages. I am not sure why I can't get it too update. It could be that it is version 2.5 and no longer supported through update manager?

Isn't this your job? Shouldn't you actually know this rather than getting people on an internet forum to do your job for you?

I honestly don't mind committing some time to help people here when they are in a pinch, but seriously, come on!

Well i think the majority of threads in this section are about things at work. Look at ROSSI threads etc. I don't see why you have to single me out as someone trying to get other people to do my job. What a silly comment.

Hopefully people will learn something from it as much as i hope to when making a thread. To be honest i don't make many threads on this forum but when i do i get nothing but negative comments. I realy don't see why, i try to be helpful and generally positive.

Everything is working fine. It was just query about getting wan connectivity on the physical vcenter box. I thought someone may just say, you should be able to add the gateway on the management nic in this way or something like. You would need to add another nic etc. I was not expecting someone to redesign the whole network or virtual infrastructure :D

This is not even required of me as a part of my job. I was just updating vcenter and thought it would be good to get the update manager working. no one has asked me to do that or anything. It was merely of interest sake.

I have already built a new vcenter server for when we update to esx 4 and 5, that is a virtual server and has wan connectivity fine. It was more of a strange issue that i thought someone might shed some light on.

It would take quite a long time to explain where you are going wrong and the steps required to get a properly configured virtual solution. As DRZ stated there also appears to be a worrying knowledge gap. Perhaps it would be worth getting an expert in to check that your infrastructure has been properly configured?

What an insulting an arrogant comment. If only i was an expert like you then i could advise people to get experts in because they don't know anything on internet forums.
