Vcore not sticking and Ntune better than bios?

hi,

Ive recently fixed up my previously hot system by adding a corsair h50..loverly bit of kit i must say, anyway with the new cooling I was hopeing to finaly realise the potential of my q6600, so armed with enough guides to baffle a jedi i went about setting up the system to run faster...

everything went fine until i tried to push the cpu past 2500 ... yes ..2.5..

is anything running hot? no

but to my amazement when in windows using ntune i can bump the speed up to 2.7 ish being stable.

My first though was settings but after going through everything i can i put it down to vcore as it will just hitting 1.2v at the 2.7..

so in bios i go to the overvoltage section and bump it up to 1.25

does it do 1.25? .. .no .. it goes whatever voltage it wants to go at..

so this is a plea for help, if its a setting then ill look stupid but at least i will get the system up to speed, if its 1 rubbish component.. well.. i guess its time to save up again.. but any help advice or questions are more than welcome.

heres the specs:

Asus p5n32e-sli
corsair dominator 1066 stuff (5 5 5 15 @ 2.100v)
Q6600 g0 stepping
8800gts 320mb
Xfi-Xtreme gamer
550w generic psu
Corsair H50 cpu cooler

I cant think what else to put down that might effect the system.. still if you can think of anything do ask.

Im trying to get the system to 3ghz .. or at least 2.8 surely the "legendary" q6600 could handle this? unless i have the only special robin reliant edition cpu..

anyway, thanks in advance for any help.

ok so it seems im not getin many responces ..

ill try and sum it up ,

having unlinked ram and fsb..

turning off speedstep and the like

ive bumped up the fsb...

why would ntune in windows allow 2.7 when bios wont boot properly at 2.5+ ?

Have you tried doing so without ntune / nvidia perfromance software installed?

It has a tendancy to override what the bios has set, this can cause instability.

Try uninstalling it then just oc'ing from the bios.

ok tried that , and ive found something new while doing it.

if i run the memory at 800

and bump the vcore to 1.26

then i can get 2.6 stable

but any more and it gets squiffy

could it have been my ram all along?

so at least its doing more than 2.5 ..

Edit: ive just got 2.7 , and it runs prime95 stable . .but with superpi and other benchmarks im getin lower scores than at stock? is it starting to kick out faults to much?

I hate to say it but none of the Nforce boards have ever clocked 65nm Q series quads with a large success rate
Only very few of the boards have had any success with them, and even then it varied wildy from individual board to board across all the manufacturers, some would clock quads mildly others just wouldnt.
I'd say that's where your problem lies if all else is well with your system,if you have a dual core lying around or can borrow one,I'd be willing to bet that clocks no problem at all.
These boards really dont like 65nm quads.
Best option if you really want to keep the Q6600 is dump the board and pick up a second hand P35/P45/X38 motherboard,or new ofc if you have the budget for it.

sigh....a core 2 lying around.. i wish i am for lack of a better term "skinny flint"

but at least theres some idea as to whats in the way now , thanks legion

any surgestions on which board? ive been with nforce ever since my last via board..which was running a thunderbird 1.4 :/

It's not worth the hassle buddy.
You could go through 10+ nforce boards before you found one that would clock that quad mildy.

If you mean which P35/P45/X38 then I'd say stick with Abit,Asus or Gigabyte, but those are my personal preferences.
Any of those chipsets will clock your Q6600 with ease.
With a choice of 3 chipsets dont get confused, none of them are mind blowingly better than each other but are exactly what you want for that quad.
I just posted those 3 as you have more variety and will make it far easier for you to find a board, personally I wouldnt buy any of them new,I'd look for a second hand one.

I take it the P range is lower than the X range? ... OcUk have got some nice x48's ? are they gonna do the job?

Obviously i dont want to spend more than needed so if these x48 things are only for some of the QX9million quads then all i want is something to push this q6600 as if im gonna splash some serious cash ill move to i5/i7 ..which aint cheap

The major difference between P boards and X board is X boards can run 2 gfx cards at 16x speed on the PCIE lanes, although for X38/48 that's limited to ATI Xfire, they dont support SLI.

P35/45 also support Xfire but they run it at 8x pcie speed for both cards or 16x for a single card and as above they dont support SLI.

Overclocking potential and features are just as good as X boards on the P range for considerably less money

As you run a single gfx card none of this is an issue to you.
In your shoes I really couldnt justify buying a brand new s775 motherboard when you have plans to upgrade to i5/i7 hence I suggested you look at buying a secondhand board.
P35/P45/X38 have some really good deals for secondhand boards as it's a dead end upgrade path now, dont get me wrong they will be good gaming bases for the next 18months at least with the right hardware in them, but to buy one new is a complete waste of money.
These are ofc just my opinions,I'd hate to see you throw good money after bad now for another brand new board which will have extremly limited resale potential, when a secondhand board will do exactly what you want for a lot less money leaving you to spend the difference or save it for another upgrade later.

thanks again legion .. looks like im hunting for a nice cheap p45 board now ..

as the i5/i7 will be quite some time as it would require a lot of saving up for me.

its a shame I have to give up my nforce.. but like when i moved from amd to intel.. some things may hurt.. but they must be done

do OcUk still have there sales board here? or has it gone?

It's still here and as busy as ever.
The rules have changed a bit about how you get access to it though,it's not a simple as rack up 100 posts as it used to be.
I think you now have to have had a members account for a certain length of time before you can see the members market, how long this is now I couldnt tell you.
Perhaps someone here could or you could maybe email a don and ask them nicely about the time period.

Edit.......... just noticed you've had an acc since 2004 so the time period is a non issue, just post your way to 100 posts and the members market should become available to you.
