I'm going to be buying a new router with one eye on upgrading my broadband in the near future but I was wondering if the router I'll need for the upgrade will be compatible in the mean time with my current connection (10mb/1mb, not sure exactly if its ADSL or ADSL2)?

Thanks.

Does that mean you have the option of VDSL2 but haven't taken it up?

Yeah, it goes from £15/month to £30/month as well as a router cost and setup cost so it goes from around £180 for the year to £525 for the year so it's been justifying that to people who wouldn't use the increased speed :p.

£30/m is steep, but given your location i'm guessing you don't have that many options. Something like the TP Link W9980 supports ADSL/ADSL2+/VDSL or if you prefer a 2 box solution the HG612 (ex BT OpenReach) modem once unlocked supports the same, meaning you can choose a 'dumb' router without an inbuilt modem.

Unfortunately. One company owns all the infrastructure and allows one other company to use their lines (they essentially work out at the same price though). The only other options are wireless only solutions (Satellite) which seem like they can be a bit sketchy. It's not terrible considering 10/1 is £15 and 80/10 is £30 though.

I remember paying £50 for 512k, £30 for 80/20 while a little more pricey than you can get on the mainland isn't that horrific.

Ended up getting it anyway, 80/10 coming on the 23rd :D.

It's £37/month but it's the price you pay for being on a small island (One is £30/month and one is £37/month but the £30/month will cost around £170 for their supplied router and installation so they work out similar over the 18 months). This company provide you with a Fritzbox too which I believe are pretty decent generally.
