It's been reported in the Financial Times BT are currently looking at FTTC (Fiber To The Curb) using VDSL2 for the last mile.

One of the main plus points of this technology is the sheer speed it will allow, 100mbits/s at .5km and 50mbits/s at 1km. It's also backwards compatible with ADSL2+ and ADSL, which means it should be easy to roll-out not disrupting old services.

To find out more about VDSL2 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_High_Speed_Digital_Subscriber_Line_2

Here follows graphs of estimated download speed and upload speed.

Yeah VDSL2 is some good stuff. Shame there's no chance of us seeing it in this country for a long time yet - probably about 10 years.

the estimated £4bn capital expenditure

I wonder how many lines wouldn't need anything done to them to do VDSL2 though (in the sense that they're <1km long, and attached to a DSLAM that'll do VDSL2)...

BT are also still looking at FTTD (Fibre to the door) and are planning ar trial at a green feild site later in 2008 as the whole site will not have standard copper lines it will all be fiber.

VDSL good for existing lines and FTTD for new build greenfield sites

I like how it still drops down to snail-like ADSL speeds at 4000 feet though :(

Snail-like? Turn off your broadband and use a 14.4 modem for a week - then you'll appreciate what you've got now :p

My cable died after a lightning storm last weekend, and I had to use a modem for FOUR DAYS!! I nearly died from the slowness :p

God bless broadband tbh, but it could do with being a bit broader ;)

We needed to download that drivers for an network printer today while multicasting Window's images to computers. I'm not joking here windows peaked at 504bytes/second! :(
