It's been reported in the Financial Times BT are currently looking at FTTC (Fiber To The Curb) using VDSL2 for the last mile.
One of the main plus points of this technology is the sheer speed it will allow, 100mbits/s at .5km and 50mbits/s at 1km. It's also backwards compatible with ADSL2+ and ADSL, which means it should be easy to roll-out not disrupting old services.

Here follows graphs of estimated download speed and upload speed.
