just seen this tripod. Seems quite good and can be shrunk down to a fairy small size plus its light weight. Would this tripod work with a D40, if not, can anyone recommend something similar?

It would work, but in cheap tripods the last thing you need is a small, light one. It'll be awful. It'll wobble all over the place, negating every purpose of a tripod.

I've got a cheap Velbon (might even be that one) which I've long-since given up using for anything other than an adhoc umbrella/flash stand. Save up for something better - Velbon will make better for a bit more, but if possible save up for something like the Manfrotto 190XB Tripod + 390RC2 Head kit. You'll only end up buying something like it eventually, so why spend money twice? :)

OK thanks, advice taken on board.

Any recommendations for a lightweight, compatible with D40, cheap and able to shrink to smallish size tripod?
