Hi

I have some leather gloves but the velcro on them needs replacing.

I've asked a few leather repair places locally in Birmingham but none of them can do it.

What kind of place can I take them to for repair?

dont know if its suitable in Birmingham but sail makers etc for boats usually have pretty heavy industrial machines that can sew anything ( they often make custom bags and covers etc too so one off jobs aren't that hard to get done)

I can't believe a leather repairer won't do it, all they've got to do is unpick the old and restitch the new.

Have you tried places that deal with equestrian stuff like saddles and things?

Have you tried a normal seamstress/tailor?
Have you considered doing it yourself? I do most of my own leather repairs and have done a couple of textile mods, too. Not always amazingly pretty, but all of them have held for years. Give it a go...

what kind of thread do you use?

For non-stress things like clips and straps and pocket flaps, I just get the strongest button thread in the shop. We have haberdasheries, John Lewises and all kinds of places that sell this stuff.

For stress points like seams, I use a waxed saddle thread. It turns from black to dirty silver after a few months exposure to rain and road crap, but it has several dozen kilos of breaking strain.

Get a multi-size set of sewing needles with triangular profile because, according to the sweet old lady in the haberdashery, "They're sharp as **** and go through five layers of 1.5mm leather like **** through a goose"!!:D

We've got an old fashioned cobblers in town who has repaired all sorts of stuff for me over the years, My Dog lead & Harness, My Leather rucksack etc
I'm not to far from you so if you do get stuck plan a ride over this way & pop in & get him to do it.
Should be an old fashioned cobblers around your way somewhere though.

It was someone who I work with who used to be a seamstress.

I managed to convince her to come out of retirement especially for my gloves!
