Does anyone here have a Velux Dormer in their loft?

I’m about to instruct an architect to draw up plans for a 2x double bedroom & 1x en-suite loft conversion. I’ve been looking at various dormer options from the shed stuck on the roof to the more aesthetically pleasing bird box type. The bird box type is more in keeping with the area. The average quote I’m getting is around £5k + VAT per bird box and I’d need 3. These Velux dormers came up in my search and the kit + windows seems to be around the same price and are a one day install job.

Pros seem to be:
  • Excellent light
  • Excellent ventilation
  • Quick install reducing overall project time and labour cost
  • Possibly cheaper

Possible cons:
  • Too much sunlight leading to hot rooms. They’ll be on the southern elevation on the south coast.
  • Opening windows too close to the floor - possible issues with building control and/or planning? Is there something about openings being a certain distance above the floor?

They seem to be relatively new to the market so I can‘t find many end user reviews or experiences. Can anyone shed any light? (see what I did there?)

Do you find the sound of rain restful? If their dormer windows are anything like a standard Velux window, they’re very noisy during heavy rain and hail.

Another negative (IMO) is that rain is really noisy on them when it hits.

Amen to this!

Got one on a single storey extention and this is what grinds my gears the most.
It's only around 1m x 1m and is still annoying to me.
All OK if you're fine with this of course.

Being Velux I am sure it is well made but it just looks like a bodge of windows together.

Perhaps that pictire isnt the best as the finish isnt applied though.
