Has anyone been following the recent developments involving Venezuela?

Apparently, Venezuela lead by Nicolás Maduro have cut all diplomatic relations with the United States after Trump recognised the opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the new president of Venezuela after Guaidó claimed himself as president only two weeks after Maduro was sworn in for a second six-year term. In light of the crisis inside Venezuela, namely mass starvation, hyperinflation (1m%) and violence...

Venezuela was once the richest country in South America due to its huge natural oil reserves. Hugo Chávez installed a mirror socialist state based on the system installed by his friend, mentor and father-figure Fidel Castro in Cuba. This was initially very successful, but since the economic crash in 2008, the country rapidly declined due to this as well as the death of Hugo Chavez in 2013 leading to the socialist party nominating Nicolás Maduro.

This seems to be an issue the UK is being dragged into due to the bank of England recently blocking Maduro from accessing $1.2b worth of gold at the request of the US government.

Pompeo the US secretary of state earlier at the UN called Maduros regime in Venezuela an "illegitimate mafia state"

Another quote from Pompeo:

“Today nine out of ten citizens living in poverty. Millions lack access to drinking water and food," Pompeo said. "Three out of four hospitals have been abandoned. Three million Venezuelans have been forced to flee their homelands thereby flooding the region and threatening international peace and security.”

There is also some pushback from the international community, namely Russia and China disagreeing with the stance the US is taking, with Russia sending operatives to Venezuela in recent days.

It seems like a rapidly escalating issue that could snowball very quickly

PS. Before anyone says it, this is not an attack at socialist ideology.

I'm pretty sure they've more or less sold the oilfields to Rus-Sino interests, so it's not a surprise they're unhappy about it being irritated. Just another day in the increasingly turbulent 21st century. Completely ******* irrelevant when we're heading for ecological collapse, it's a waste of everyone's time discussing this, we need to start rapidly ignoring small-fry political problems, because we're missing the bigger picture by such a long margin, it simply won't matter.

Couldn't agree more, however, I do occasionally like to talk about something other than climate destruction, it feels very hopelessly depressing in reality. Especially when the two countries absolutely destroying the planet are India and China.

Something people dont seem to realise is that unlike in other countries where the Army is loyal to protecting the state... The Army in Venezuela is loyal to protecting the government, this is how the army has been created and bred in that country.

I think the U.S are pretty interested in provoking the WWIII, and if Trump does it, it will be the end of the world in this shape.
Nato has a bigger and more powerful counter-organisation in the face of the SCO.

Hilary was far more likely to provoke WW3, she literally wanted to put a no-fly zone over syria meaning the US would have had to shoot down russian jets..

lolbuthillary

Lets be very clear, from as early as 2012 she was calling for a no-fly zone over syria, some quotes in 2013:
"To have a no-fly zone you have to take out all of the Syrian government's air defence, many of which are located in populated areas."
"So our missiles, even if they are standoff missiles so we're not putting our pilots at risk - you're going to kill a lot of Syrians."

To which James Clapper the Former United States Director of National Intelligence said that a no-fly zone could lead to russians shooting down US jets to protect their ground forces.
Hillary herself didn't rule out the idea of shooting down Russian jets either.

So no, "lolbuthillary", she was literally saying these things.. things that may have led to a god damn war with Russia.

I don't know why you replied to the original post. What exactly are you saying - that genocide happens elsewhere, not just in oil rich countries?
I didn't want to say anything about genocide.

It was a direct reply about the possible consequencies of the U.S intervention there.

Destabilisation happens when you paint borders based on ethnic groups within a country whose central government doesn't agree.

*Cough* Isreal.

Now that his coup attempt has failed, Trump is making plans to impose a naval blockade on Venezuela.

Axios has the story.

I am not sure that his military advisers will be so enthusiastic.

Venezuela is not, and has never been, a democratic socialist state.

Bernie Sanders
"These days, the American dream is more apt to be realized in South America, in places such as Ecuador, Venezuela and Argentina, where incomes are actually more equal today than they are in the land of Horatio Alger. Who's the banana republic now?"

Jeremy Corbyn
"Thanks Hugo Chavez for showing that the poor matter and wealth can be shared. He made massive contributions to Venezuela & a very wide world"

Funny how the no true scotsman fallacy rears its head the second a state that was heralded as the embodiment of socialism inevitably fails.

Socialism always leads to dictatorship.
