I use this programme to back up to LTP tape drive, but does anyone know if you can backup to a external USB HDD?

BackupExec has a built in backup-to-disk feature which should do the job.

The way we do it at work is where it creates a file on the backup device (HDD) with all the files in it.

EDIT:
Sorry just thought thats not much details. I believe you set it up in the media panel. Once you've setup the new backup-to-disk media you can then set it as the destination in the job list.

A quick word of advice (after some recent experience with USB HDD's and backup software), be very very careful.

How much data are you looking to backup, and on what frequency?

How long is your backup window?

Looking to back up around 70GB of data onto a 320GB HDD, once a day incremental.

So, your initial backup will be 70GB? Bear this in mind, that first backup will take forever - and I'm not joking.

I'm assuming you're planning on doing a full backup once per week then? With incrementals every weekday (or similar) ?

Do yourself a big favour, plug a USB HDD into a pc at work, or at home, and dump 10GB to it. Check how long it takes and do the sums. Not the most scientific method but it will give you a semi accurate time window to plan your backups on. No matter what you use (NTBackup or Veritas) it will be painfully slow, as I found out not so long ago.
