Very basic CPU upgrade question.

If I upgrade my CPU do I need to update bios or change OS at all? Can I just whip one out and stuff the new one in?

My mobo is supposedly compatible (775 chipset, Q8200 to Q9550)
 
Thanks chaps. Is the bios update required as a matter of course when changing CPU? Or is it possible my bios (no idea what it is atm) will already be compatible??
