When trying to playback any avi file the playback is very dark. I've tried wmp11 and Vlc and both give the same result but mov files played in Quciktime are fine.
Check your graphics card control panel - I had this recently after updating drivers and simply had to click "default" in the control panel, overlay settings iirc.
