Very Expensive Mishap

It was my other half's Birthday a couple weeks ago and because it was her 21st i thought i'd get her something special!

I bought her a 32GB iPod touch with all the trimmings, was going to skimp a little bit and get the 8GB but thought i should get the more expensive and faster (processor wise). It came to £200 from Gatwick duty free so thought it was a bargain getting the 32GB for this price. (Glad i got the newer faster version as it is blazingly quick compared to my ageing 3G.

Anyway, today while she was working, there was a little mishap... :(

At the moment we're out in Portugal and she was working on Golf course. The iPod was perfect for passing the time when trade is slow but today the damn sprinklers came on drenching her but more importantly...:D...the iPod which i have just shelled out quite a lot of my savings on.

My question is...what can be done to save the iPod. :(

It was on before it got drenched but is now off, i haven't dared try and turn it back on since as i don't want to break it even more. The bad thing is, i got her all the protective casings and screen protectors so it wouldn't get damaged but when i went to pick her up and have a look at it the water has been trapped in by the case...If i tap the iPod against my hand water comes out of the volume controls... I've just now put it in a bag full of rice and silica gel, i am planning on leaving it in this bag for a couple days!

Fingers crossed! :(

Im sure water won't of got inside it to much, if it was dropped in water that would be a different story!

Has the water sensor gone red in the headphone socket?

its a solid state device, put it in an airing board for a week or 2, and LEAVE it, then turn it on, it should be fine...touch wood.

I did check that as soon as i had my hands on it. Nope, still white! :)

As said in my OP, it's currently sitting in a bag of rice with some silica gel thrown in for good measure! :D

I hope it works again... :(

I would try to claim from the place she works really.

It doesn't seem particularly clever of them to have sprinklers that work in such a way that it sprays people without warning.

as it hapens ill be flying from gatwick next week what shop did you get this from ? i assume its a pay n go one not contract ?

if you dont mind.

Solid state devices + water don't mix well. If it was on and water got in then you have possible short issues. Even if you were lucky and it hassn't fried itself and once COMPLETELY dry it turns on your likely to have oxidation issues down the line.

I'm sure there's someone on here who works in the mobile phone repair industry - Apple too IIRC - he'd be a good person to speak too.

As for drying it I've always found a warm (airing cupboard) environment works well. The bag method is ok but warm moving air work s better imo.

I dropped my mobile in the sink the other week and it survived, you would be suprised what electronics can live through if you give it plenty of time to dry out before attempting to turn it on.

Like has been said, an airing cupboard works well.

I actually dried mine out by taking it apart and putting it on the top fan vents on my pc case for afew days, the warm moving air did the job nicely :).

She works in conjunction with the course. So she's not directly employed by the golf course but makes her money from the course.

She rang her boss and explained what happened and how upset she was about her iPod. When she said she was going to complain to the course all he could say was "We are seen but not heard"...

She was not amused!

The iPod is still drying as we speak, i want to make sure it's dry.

As mentioned above i am a bit worried about oxidisation of the components. The white litmus in the headphone jack isn't red so if all else fails... :(
