Very happy man..

I paid. Was looking at Mission 751s, but I heard they weren't to great for bass.

For there size they have stunning bass, people often say they lack bass because it isnt OTT and boomey. the 751 bass is taut and fast as hell, very deceptive though as they do go quite low. They would certainly need a Sub in a home cinema setup but then pretty much all speakers do.

I bought a set new when they came out, they were my very first proper hi-hi purchase. they were paired with a big old silver kenwood trio amp at the time. the thing with the 751 is they just get better and better with higher qualty amps/cdp. I kept mine for around 10 years, in that time they were used with Cyrus III amp, then finally my current Roksan Kandy III amp. When I finally did upgrade it cost me £800 to find a speaker with a worthwhile improvement in sound quality.

When they finally did go (my own fault I might add) I replaced the drivers which can still be sourced from Mission, had them replaced, and gave them to my dad. there still in use to this day and sound great. They do need a amp with a bit of grunt to drive them though. they sounded terrible on my dads old £100 sony amp. so I bought him a Arcam alpha 7 and now they sing again.

For anyone after a true hi-fi classic at bargain price, grab em while you can.

I'm a big fan of late 70s/early 80s receivers/stereo amps from the Japanese companies. There's some awesome amps out there (Sony, Rotel, Pioneer, Kenwood and a few others) for <£20. If you're not sure on the quality, a good yard stick is to pick the amp up and feel how heavy it is. Heavy = good, most of the time (it usually indicates a nice chunky power supply). :o

Sounds that way, the review I saw made them seem more expensive. Oh well, to me they're worth the money I paid. Was looking at Mission 751s, but I heard they weren't to great for bass.

Rubbish they have snappy tight bass with reasonable extention and a midrange that will try and rip your face off for mids (awesome speakers for vocal and acoustic work) just without excess, a sub just adds to it. Was using the slight bass boost on my Cambridge Audio A5, had the volume at half and got in trouble with noise pollution and environmental safety the first weekend I lived in my current house, when next door on my left thought I had a real band/band practice over when we were playing Rock Band/Guitar Hero run through it, the bass was going through the walls (I rent a new build terrace house)

For the size though, supply ample bass and they will do as much as almost any bookshelf can though!

If you turn them up with a powerful amp you might just upset the neighbours at uni :P
