VERY high e6600 oc temps

as title says, I've oc'ed my new e6600 to 3ghz and when running orthos my temps go grom about 35 degrees idle to 70 degrees load on stock volts

I'm using an AC 7 pro and I've applied AS5 thermal paste.

This is in an antec 900 case.

Is there anything I can do to get these temps down (apart from turning up the fan speed)?

There's a good guide to lapping intel heatspreaders somewhere, can't remember where though. Can take your temps down a lot if the IHS is concave

as a first time builder I'm a little dubious about unleashing myself on my ne processor with a handful of sandpaper :p

Anyway if it helps here's a screenie of orthos and speedfan:

AS I mentioned in this thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17723163 you say stock volts? I would imagine you have the Vcore on Auto, if so you mobo is prob pumping more volts into your CPU than is actually needed.

Manually set your Vcore to 1.325v and go from there. It will prob STOP on Orthos at that, but you can keep uping it til its stable, and your temps will drop too.

70c at 3ghz isn;t right!

judging by his cpu-z screenshot he is as stock volts, but that said my cpu-z always shows a lower voltage so who knows...

no no, I read that post and did set it to stock volts but still no avail :(

Could it be that I didn't apply enough thermal paste? I put too much on before and wiped some off so could it have left a layer too thin?

It idles at around 35 - 40, and at stock speed it was about 30 and went up to 60 load.

I put an AC7 on my mates pc and he had a crappy 30 quid case from another store but his e6300 idles at 20 degrees

Or could that just be down to lower clock speed?

I'd never trust that, CPU-z has never given me an accurate reading, hell I don;t even think it has changed :)

I only trust PC Probe for my vcore, its the most accurate. Everest reckons I'm pumping 2.19v into my CPU  I wouldn't be typing this right now if that was the case, I'd be on my Mac ordering a new CPU... and mobo prob where the CPU has melted into the board :)

That doesn't sound right, I would reseat the heatsink and stick some new paste on there.

I agree with killer, something it wrong, give it another reseat!

Yeah, I'll also seat it in another direction as i've just realised that the NB heatsink is touching the bottom fin of the AC7 so this could be causing an increase in temps.

I'll get back to you when I'm done

WIN

Now idling at 27 degrees and load at 43 :D

You've just made me an extremely happy chappy.

Thanks guys :) Now on to 3.4ghz

Nice one, remember, dont leave the vcore on auto! The load temp will drop a bit in a few weeks time too once your compound settles. Now get overclocking, let us know how far you get it!

*UPDATE* Just got it up to 3.4ghz :)

Increased voltage from stock to 1.45 to keep it stable and here's the temps and proof :p :

Gonna keep orthos going over night to make sure it's stable :)

Again thanks so much guys.

you can proudly say that once its been running a lot longer than 7 minutes :p

(but yes it is easy to get excited over the potential of a mint overclock like 1gig :D)

did you say you're doing that on 1.45v? cpu-z is posting very low voltages on your screenshot i wonder why...

As I said above, ignore what cpu-z says about your vcore, its never shown a correct vcore for me. PC PRobe is the best for that (for Asus users anyway).

It's been running orthos now for 6 hours (well it had when I got up, now at 6th form so it's been going for 8 now :D it'll have done 12 by the time I get back) so so far it's perfectly stable so I'm extremely happy.

And yeah cpu-z just doesn't seem to want to show the right voltage so I'm gunna disregard that from now on.

I'm soooo tempted to push it further but I'm a tad worried about my load temps if I have to up the voltage anymore.

Still, I'm very pleased with it and I'll put final screenies up when I get back!

Temps are pretty good at 55c on full load, you can get 3.5ghz outta there at least I reckon... but don't hold me to that.

Then to your RAM, remember, when you have finished tinkering with everything run Orthos on Blend mode at priority 8 for 15 hours or so. Blend will test ya RAM and your CPU, and its the best test for overall stability!

Well done!

RIGHT! just got back and here is the final screenie :D :

edit: for some reason it keeps showing the old one

But anyway main points!

orthos: ran for 15 hours no errors
temps: 55 degrees load
cpu-z : vcore = 1.45, speed: 3401, fsb: 377

Happy now :D I'll run it on blend next to check ram is ok :)

Thanks to everyone!
