I took a book to the counter at whsmiths and there was a self service checkout adjacent to the till (why does smiths need self service checkouts ) and the checkout woman was talking to some ladies so she told me to use the self service checkout!!!

I was stunned anyway I plonked the book on the till and she finally served me.

*****.

I had something similar a few years ago on a Cross Country train, where the trolley guy stood chinwagging with 2 passengers for 40 minutes instead of serving food to the carriages.

Instead of being direct and blunt with them, I gradually turned up the volume on my MP3 player to max playing a Hospitality drum'n'base album. They finally got the message 40 minutes later when one of the passengers said "shaarrrrrrup!" (even though it wasn't a quiet coach), and the trolley guy then started to do what he was paid to do.

Does WH Smiths still charge a fair whack for their books? I haven't bought anything from them since Amazon started selling books.

You chose not to use the self service machine?!?!?!

Why do you want the human contact?

And more importantly when the machines rise you want them remembering you said thank you to their hard work as tills...

Pretty sure that's standard. I've never had one which really has kept up with their set times. It's very frustrating.

When we looked for flats we had one being late for 40mins or so. Phoned up after 20mins to be told they will be there in a minute then again after another 20mins to be told they wont show up as its already gone.

The one we ended up renting tho... agent was there waiting for us and we where there early as well. He was nice and knew what he was doing and the agency has been great since too. So I would say it depends on the agency...
