Very low fps in all games

Hi guys, I made a thread a while ago about specific problems in regards to fps in hl2/source games. Well, it seems now the problem has only got worse and I am now getting 75fps and below in all hl1 games. I have uinstalled/reinstalled so many different nividia drivers it's becoming a joke (am using driver cleaner pro btw). I returned my cpu clock back to default and the problem still is there.

This is just not right at all, considering it has been fine before. I have done all the latest anti-virus checks and nothing seems to be wrong either. I have recently just updated to the new SP1 beta to see if that helps and nothing is changed.

What can this be? Overheating? the temps on my pc seem fine idling around 49ish. Took the side panel of case of just incase too.

help indeed!

:(

check the gfx card temps, idle temps mean squat, its the load temps that you need to look at. use ati tool artifact tester to test your graphics card out, and run 3dmark 2005/6 to see if your card is performing as it should.

lastly, low performance could be due to power supply issue.

Well under ntune my gfx card temp under load is around 75ish and speedfan reports idling temp of 45 - 50 under load (bare in mind temps are different now since defaulted my cpu speed). So there seems to be no apparent overheating that I am aware of.

I'm guessing it could well be all down to the psu, but how do I know? I don't want to get a new psu and find it's the gfx card, or the cpu on its last legs... Is there any benchmark I can run to be totally sure apart from 3d mark?

No in hl1 games as well as mentioned in the first post. I get lousy performance in other games like COD4 too.

Yes the card is definitely in a PCI x16 slot ;)

But is the bus interface always operating at x16? CPU-Z, GPU-Z or Riva Tuner will show the link width.

Reason I ask is my GTX occasionally changes from x16 to x8 (slight FPS drop like you seem to be having) and once it dropped to x1 (awful performance) although obviously it is always in a x16 slot.

right do some isolation tests, run 3dmark 06, it will give you a cpu score and gfx card score. compare the cpu score to others that have the same cpu as you. if the cpu score is the same or similar then the cpu is fine. that means you have then isolated your performance issues down to your gfx card.

get the test done then post the results up here and we will take things form there then.

Perhaps a silly question.. is this 75fps an absolute max? If it is, then it sounds like vsync is on when you're not expecting it to be... have you tried a gfx tweak tool that might have started RefreshForce (or similar) without you noticing?

Okay here are the results running 3d mark 06 basic edition. Everything is on default btw.

Main Test Results

3DMark Score 8463 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 3861 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 4016 Marks
CPU Score 1885 Marks

Detailed Test Results

Graphics Tests
1 - Return to Proxycon 32.241 FPS
2 - Firefly Forest 32.102 FPS

CPU Tests
CPU1 - Red Valley 0.596 FPS
CPU2 - Red Valley 0.954 FPS

HDR Tests
1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 37.123 FPS
2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 43.205 FPS

*bump*

So is this all okay?

Update: Just been running cs 1.6 and cs:s for a while and I've noticed that I keep getting stuttering with explosions etc. Then, the the fps dips even further down.

cpu score doesn;t seem right. my opteron gets 2100 points if i recall right at 2.84ghz, your cpu shoudl be getting around 2500 points.

again im not sure i need to check my logs. but i do remember my single core opteron at 3ghz scores 1170 cpu score in 3dm06. thats why i think your cpu score does not see right.

edit: just found some old tests in 3dm2006, my x1900xt overclocked to sig specs scored 2216 in the sm2.0 test and scored 2408 in the sm3.0 test.
single core opteron at 3ghz scored 1170.
i suspect something not right with your cpu, its impossible for your cpu to be scoreing less than mine even if i have a 200mhz clock advantage. you should be getting over 2000 for the cpu points.
need to run a cpu stability test with cpu-z open to see if the clock speeds are throttling.

told you its the cpu, your score just doesn;t look right compared to mine.

go into bios and disable speedstep and all other energy conserving tricks that lower clock speeds and voltages. then check with cpu z to make sure your running the correct speeds. check your temps too since they may have increased if your clocks bump back up to 2.6ghz thats showing in your sig.
that should fix your issues.

Okay, I have just reset everything completely in the bios and now speedstep will disable properly. CPU-Z is now reporting full cpu clock speed, so now just hope everything performs as it shoud, wish me luck!

using speedfan to check temps under load I am hitting 57-8C while playing games like cs:source fps seems a bit more stable now.

I think a new cpu is in order and a new cooler - am currently using artic freezer pro 7 but doesn't seem to be cutting it.

i very much doubt your cpu is broken. what cooler are you using for it? if its stock cooler stick a cheapo freezer 7 on it and do a mild overclock.
only thing wrong with the system is your settings in the bios i bet.
im sure someone who uses the same board as you will take over now and guide you on how to get the most out of your setup.
