i'm looking to get a pc/laptop with the lowest possible power usage, it will be always on and will be used to wake up other computers on the network remotly. as well as a download box. a file sharer would be a plus but not needed as i could wake another comp if i needed files. i was thinking something like an eeepc. does anyone have any other suggestions?

Problem with the Atom is that the 945 chipset motherboards used have a TDP that’s ten times higher than the processor’s, at idle an machine using an Atom on a 945 chipset motherboard is going to use 10W more than a C7 Via platform machine of otherwise identical spec. So for now don't buy atom for power savings alone.

i would also like to occasionally watch standard def videos so im thinking the atom would be better than than a lower power machine. i'm thinking ill wait till the eeebox is out and compare the price/wattage/performance between that and a build your own atom box

i have a few 2.5" drives so i dont need to worry about getting another one, i think ill be using a 60gb for the main HDD and boot up my storage machine (5tb) to copy accross the files then shut it down

Not sure for download boxes, all the itx stuff I get/build is for firewalls/routers and either use laptop hard drives of solid state memory. Mind you they all have external USB ports so I guess adding extra HDD space is just a plug-in away.

HDD space isn't an issue for me, power is one, i need it to be on 24/7 and a full pc which uses say 300-400 w is too expensive and a lot of that is wasted (gfx card, cpu ect) when it doesn't need a high spec.

the main reason i need it on 24/7 is remote access and at the moment there is no easy/cheap method to turn a machine on remotly, when i run out of space i will wake-on-lan the other machine copy the data accross and shut it down

i couldn't wait any longer so i bought one of the barebone system from one of the first UK companes that sold them, the power draw with a 2.5" samsung is 30w which im very happy with at least untill one comes out with less than 5w
