I have a very odd problem with my internet. Basically, no program will connect the internet - skype, msn, firefox, thunderbird etc. however internet explorer 64 bit (using vista 64bit) does work. I rang virgin media and they say there's nothing wrong their end and everything seems to be ok(although my send/recieve lights on my modem arent flashing at all). I connected my laptop directly into the modem and everything seems to work fine on there so this problem is obviously something to do with my computer. This problem happened pretty randomly too.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

is the vista firewall blocking all communications other than that on port 80?

if its possible (ive never used vista in depth) can you disable the firewall like you can in windows xp and try again?

I suspect the Vista firewall is blocking all communication. You need to add the programs to the firewall rules '(Windows Firewall with Advanced security').

yeah thats what i guessed as well, wouldnt it be easier to just disable it, try it to see if it works and then if it does just add the list of programs to the firewall allowed list?

Can you ping the www.bbc.co.uk site from the command line? Try the ip address too: 212.58.226.232

Yep can ping both of those, 13ms for bbc and 9ms for the ip.

is your network configured correctly? i.e. default gateway pointing to adsl modem/router?

How do I check the settings for this? I do use a router but currently just connected directly from the modem.

if you can ping the bbc.co.uk your default gateway etc must be set up correctly.

to find out type ipconfig /all in terminal/cmd

Anybody else have any more ideas?

Vista keeps reporting all my programs as not responding too =\ (loads of skype errors)

Found the problem :). It was Nod32. Shutting Nod32 completely didnt work an uninstall was required.

Everything works fine now :D
