Started of whistling for 6k miles and has now evolved into this. Checked engine oil and its seems fine. The sound kicks in even at the slightest touch of the pedal. Before yesterday i managed to get the noise down back to whistling by allowing the car to warm up a little, which worked for a few days but now it no longer makes any difference. What could be causing this? Turbo? Something else? What causes this sound and why? Can it be driven to a garage safely without incurring damage?

Noise gets much worse higher up in the rev band.

Here's a short video recording of the issue.

Seat Altea XL 2.0tdi BKD. 61k miles.

If its not the turbo that would be a huge sigh of relief.
We thought oil may have been an issue but we checked oil level and there seems to be plenty. Topped it with a litre of castrol 5w30 just incase. Im thinking bearings too. Engine temperature is stable and no warning lights on dash. Cambelt changed in the 40k region. Water pump is the original.

Seems like we all agree on the bearing front. Garage booked for Monday.
