OK.....

I've been experiencing very poor speeds, and huge fluctuations in speeds for a while now. I'm with Tiscali 8Mb. The best speed I've had is 6900 which I'm happy with, but most of the time it's much lower. I've been keeping a log and over the past weeks it's ranged from 3000, to 1000, to 700, to 280!!!! 280!?!!? This happens at random. It isn't congestion as it has been poor in the early hours, and in middle of the day. Also note that I could walk to my exchange in 3mins.

So I set about trying to diagnose the problem messing with router settings, extension cables etc and I am confident that the problem is nothing at my end. I can run a speed test one minute at 4000, then 5 mins later at 400.

I have called tiscali, and as you people out there who are also with tiscali know, it was a waste of time. They did run a line check and reported that there is no congestion on my line at all.

So next step was to check bts line/speed checker thingy. Results below:-

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1166 kbps

Where do I go from here? Does the result above of 1166kbps mean that it's BT that are causing the problem?

Sorry to go on, but better to tell everything I've done than to answer thread replys with "tried that".

Thanks in advance

your line is fine as indicated by the sync speed and profile. i assume you never have any disconnection problems?

the throughput is the problem and you can safely point your finger at tiscali for that. (some people might say it's exchange congestion that would affect all users on your exchange regardless of isp but people with decent isps never seem to be affected by it. :p)

best bet is switch isps if you can. there's no point waiting around for things to get better. they never do in these cases. :)

The distance from your exchange isn't really a factor. I'm 1.5 miles away from th exchange and as we speak am downloading a file at 704 KB/s (on Pipex ADSL Max 8Mbps).

people with decent isps never seem to be affected by it. :p

I've seen it with Zen, so that's not so.
It's possible it's congestion at the exchange, but it's much more likely it's Tiscali at fault.

Does the BT Speedtest login still work, because that would at least eliminate Tiscali from the equation.

I tried calling Tiscali again who said there IS a fault in the line!! They are escalating this now and will call tomorrow with an update......fingers crossed!

What are you meant to do! one day they say it's fine, the next there's a fault?!!??

i know this thread is a day old but im having the same sort of problems with tiscali. did they ring you back? they never did with me and whenever i speak to their tech support via either phone or e-mail, they just fob me off with rubbish. ive had no end of problems with them and im stuck with them for a while :S
