Very poor connectivity issue with VM Superhub 3

I just moved house the other day, and VM came today to install their 50mb fibre. The connection seems fine close to the router, but it's really bad just metres away up the stairs (it drops to ~10mb/2mb/500ms). This is with the new Superhub 3. I've used the Superhub 2 before and had a much better experience than this.

So, what's the best course of action in this situation?

1. Try and get the Superhub 3 to work better.
2. Switch over to my old Superhub 2 and set it up myself.
3. Buy a better quality router – in which case, any recommendations?
4. Or, just wire a very long ethernet cable up the stairs to where I work/game.

I would naturally be inclined to do 4, but I don't know if it's worth the hassle with my girlfriend.

I have the same issue, the WiFi from my Virgin Hub3 seems quite weak and drops out upstairs.
Are the Unifi AP better than the mesh systems?
I was thinking about buying a couple of the Amplifi HD routers (1 upstairs, 1 downstairs) as it would give me some ethernet ports upstairs too for another PC without WiFi

If you've still got your hub 2 and the engineer didn't take it away you can use that fine with the 50mb package.

IMO dedicated AP is always better however they need you to be able to run an Ethernet cable to where you mount them. If you can’t do that then the mesh system is the next best thing and far superior to range extenders or powerline solutions. In most home situations the mesh system will serve you every bit as well as dedicated APs so it comes down to budget, convenience and personal preference.

Thanks @BigT
I'm unable to easily/neatly run an ethernet upstairs so it sounds like I need to buy a couple of mesh routers

I've got AmpliFi and I'm also a beta tester for them. With the latest 2.5 firmware it's running really well, they ported over a lot of fixes from the UniFi AP firmware recently. The two systems are closely linked.

Just a quick update
I picked up a couple of Amplifi HD routers and they're great!
Really easy to set up and good performance so far.
I have the 2nd one upstairs on the landing, but was surprised when I ran a speedtest on the upstairs PC (connected via ethernet to the 2nd router) and got the full 200/20.

They've been running now for 4 days, but zero drop outs in that time :)

If you're gaming I would run a cable over using any sort of wireless even if it was quick and stable.
