Hey all. Today I did a clean XP install on my parents computer. I installed the drivers I need but it is very slow. Slow to boot (5 mins to useable) slow to navigate within windows, slow to extract.

It is running flat out on only one core. Also, the audio is very choppy, even within windows, like the error sounds etc. It also says a bunch of drivers are not signed when I installed them. It happened during audio install, video install and AVG install.

Also, installs keep on failing because of unspecified errors.

In addition to this, avg crashes because avgfapx.exe had an error occur.
When I installed windows, half way through it couldn't find a file on the disk. I took the disk out and cleaned it (twice) and then it finally carried on as normal.

What could all of these errors be about?

Phenom II x2 545 overclocked
2GB ddr3 1333 oc to 1666
Asrock 760gm gs3
Radeon 3000 integrated.

All these components worked in the pc this morning. My parents HDD worked too although itis old now.

I think that rig would be capable of running Windows 7 smoothly, why XP?

As for the issues you are experiencing, it sounds like it could be an array of things.

The hard drive is old like you said; do you find it when it seeks it makes a noticeable grinding noise often?

i personally would be doing another clean install of windows and then go from there having to remove the disc so many times cannot possible be a good thing

The HDD has always made a random noise like a motorbike accelerating and changing gear, since we got that HDD in 2003, in various computers. My parents are big fans of xp and the layout, I can't convince them to get 7 lol.

Run CHKDSK with scanning for bad sectors.

Edit:

Also have you tried to install with the overclock disabled? Also have you tested your memory for errors?

Do you also have all the chipset drivers for your mobo at hand?
