hey, I have a 7 year old! Dell D610 laptop and recently it has been getting slower and slower, espically in starting up as it takes around 10 minutes if i'm lucky. I use the disk cleanup wizard to clean temporary files etc. and i defrag the hard drive. The are only the essentials in the startup folder so nothing slowing it down there. So i was thinking is it getting to the end of it's life????????

spec:

Intel Pentium M 1.86Ghz
1 GB RAM
40GB HDD!
Windows XP

External Monitor, keyboard and mouse - with 500GB external HDD

You could try reinstalling windows, but to be honest the age of your laptop is against it really.
If you don't need anything for heavy gaming use you could replace this with something much better for around £300.

kk, whats good for £300?

Compared to what your currently using...

ANYTHING

Seriously.. Go choose anything off the shelf for about £300 notes. It'd probably be prudent to wait a couple of weeks though so Windows 7 is pre-installed instead of getting the upgrade to Vista currently available.

ie: All machines (except macs & Bare) come with Vista pre-installed and an upgrade disk to Win 7.

Wait for those machines to clear or be shop upgraded before buying one. (They get the hassle then)

I would advise getting something that would last instead of getting something that is cheap and would probably only last a few years.
Mac's are widely known as the best laptop, however if you have a tight budget or little experience on a Mac its not advisable, unless you want a change (for the better...)

Sony Vaio's are very good for the price, and I've had nothing but good experiences on them.
You'd be better off getting something like a Hp if you use it everyday, as their quite cheap and 'nice'.
I personally hate Acers, Dell and all of those other manufactures that always claim to have such a bargain, they are usually made with terrible components and work for a year or so before going wrong.

It sounds like you have it set up as a desktop setup?
If you are I would advise just buying a desktop, as their easier to customize for your price range and needs.
