For a few weeks now my laptop has taken up to 5 mins to go from login to showing the desktop. Once I enter username/password it just sits at the desktop background and maybe 3-5 mins later the icons and taskbar appear.

I have tried disabling all the startup items and still no joy. Really haven't a clue what is causing it. Any ideas? Any easy way to help diagnose this?

Thanks

Tried BootVis but it showed nothing other than disk read speeds. Its an HP laptop. Very annoying.

By the way if I run explorer from the Task Manager manually the desktop appears within seconds.

The only errors in event viewer is this:

Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

I just tried disabling wireless adapter before restart at it seemed to login much quicker. Should I just take out the domain entry from the network settings under 'system' and 'computer name changes'? I take it I don't need the domain name to be entered to join via VPN? I could just add a workgroup if that would be better.

I have done the defrag, checked the startup items, tried disabling wireless before start, adding reg keys as suggested by msoft but no joy. Its one of those corporate crappy builds so I guess it just clogs itself up over time.
