I just built a new PC with

AMD 64 4200 dual core
1 gig ram
Asus motherboard
running win XP

However I did nto buy a new HDD or CD drive so I have them running off the one IDE cable slave and master.

I find if installing software from the CD very very slow and holds the who PC up and the CPU util is nothing to report and the Memory Util is very low as well.

Could thsi be the problem with the drives hanging of the one IDE, would it be better to get a Sata CD or HDD?

Or do i need an update for my CPU or somthing?

So far it as taken over 30 mins to install far cry!!!!!!

Hello

I presume you have all the latest drivers from the manufacturers website etc? Might be worth looking at that.

Did you also install the AMD dual core optimizer? That "could" help things, but I doubt it would help that much in terms of performance for something that your describing. Did you install any other form of Processor drivers?

I take it the motherboard you have only has the one IDE channel on the motherboard? Otherwise you would have plugged in the cd-rom and hard drive separately.

It could literally jsut be that the hard drive is old...But hey, how old is it?

My hard drive is less than a year old ran fine on my old machine i took it out of today
My spec is :

ATI HD 3600 512
AMD 64x2 4200+
Motherboard ASRock ALiveNF6G-VSTA

I installed AMD_Dual-Core_Optimizer_113

Running win xp pro SP2

Yes, get the HDD and DVD off the same IDE channel.

Depending on how old the drives truly are and the state of them (guessing it's not a motherboard chipset driver) the DVD could be clocking the IDE channel down to PIO mode and making for lovely 16MB/sec transfers.

Easy answer - buy a SATA hard drive.

Just a thought, as the hardware I have is mostly win vista.

If i install that it may cure the problem, I have a spare new IDE HDD I could try anyone think this may be worth a try ?

Get the drives off the same channel. Mixing and matching HDD and optical drives on the same channel is a bad idea.

Vista will likely make things worse. It does with everything else!

well i downloaded all the latest updates from windows.

I removed the cd drive and still same issue , so suspect not a speed issue with sharing the same IDE

So just about finished installing vista will see if this works
