Not sure as to whether or not this is the right forum, if so I apologise, but anyway:

My computer seems to have developed some kind of fault. Up until yesterday it was working absolutely fine, booting from cold into useable desktop in roughly 35-40 seconds. I have made no configuration changes for weeks. Just yesterday it held on the Windows XP loading screen for at elast 30 seconds. Then the login box didn't appear for another 10 seconds. After typing the password it took a further 20 seconds to get to a useable desktop (usually it's about 5 seconds for this). When loading applications they take a very long time to load up, and frequently crash and freeze up on me when I attempt to use them. I have no idea why this is.

Does anyone have any kind of idea as to what this usually is? Hard drive is 3 weeks old, Seagate Barracuda 500GB, P4 3GHz, 2GB Kingston Valueram, Abit FPIN9 mobo, unbranded crap PSU.

I'm guessing the memory might be on its way out but still it's just a guess. Anyone able to shed light on this?

TIA.

Might be OS/security software crapping out or then some malware...

(What web browser you're using?)

I'm using Firefox latest version.

This has never happened before. It just started yesterday, so I imagine it might be hardware related.

Edit: OK I've left it on for a few hours and now it runs fine, just as quick as it should be. But when I turn it off again then reboot from cold the problem reappears. Any ideas here?
