Very Strange Mouse Issue

I have the Microsoft wireless Laser mouse 5000v1.0 and the wireless laser keyboard 600v2.0 using the wireless desktop receiver 3.1. I have updated the software and checked to see if there were any updated drivers. I had this issue with windows XP and now windows 7. I have done a full virus / malware scan

Sometimes my mouse ends up doing different things. For example if i double click a hard drive in my computer the properties windows comes up rather than opening the drive. Also when using mozilla and clicking a bookmark it goes to the "save to" window! And when using excel, and i think work, i cannot type any text or edit anything. Normally what i have to do to get it back is either restart or change a setting in the Microsoft mouse software; the scroll speed is what i usually do and save it

Any ideas thanks?

If nobody knows of this issue are there any general diagnostics / software "tests" i could run the next time it occurs to get a better understanding of the issue please; it does SEEM to occur more often when i use mozilla and have a few windows exploer's open but that could be coincodence

Since it happened in both XP and 7 it sounds likely to be hardware. Have you tried simply moving the receiver to another location to ensure it isn't overheating or getting interference? Also try using a different USB/PS2 port. If USB you can also try setting the port speed down to USB1.1 in your BIOS as USB2 has been known to make some receivers erratic.

Although the symptoms show up when using the mouse, the cause sounds more to do with the keyboard or the emulation in the receiver, where it thinks some keys are jammed on. Maybe try using an onscreen keyboard/diag program that shows which keys are currently pressed, which you can leave running and might show some activity when the fault occurs.

Also doublecheck you haven't enabled Win accessibility features (Filterkeys/Stickykeys).

Either a battery issue, or maybe the microswitches sticking together and getting triggered? Have you tried taking it apart and giving it a clean?
