I have posted this in Apple hardware as it mainly concerns 2 IPods, but also flash drives, on Windows 7 and XP. If it's in wrong section mods please move accordingly, thankyou.

Hi,
Yesterday I went to put some music onto my IPod touch 2nd gen. I connected the usb cable, it detected and loaded fine. Did what I needed to do, disconnected. 10 mins later I reconnected it to put some more on, this time however it did not detect the iPod. Nothing showed on screen, nothing in device Manager, nothing happened on the iPod.

I tried a different cable, nothing.
I tried another iPod (3rd Gen Nano), nothing.
I tried a USB flash drive, then another flash drive, both nothing.
I connected my HTC phone, nothing.
Tried all USB ports, nothing.

The iPods and phone all charge okay, so the USB ports are putting out power, but nothing is being detected in Windows 7 (My Computer, device manager or iTunes).

Keyboard and mouse work fine. So I'm thinking my computer doesn't want to detect things that are mass storage devices. Now here's the funny thing, I tried all of the above devices in my Win XP laptop... exact same problem?! Charging, but not reading/detecting.

Scanned for virues/malware, nothing found. tried system restore, but get an error message saying restore operation failed.

In summary..
- iPods, flash drives, phone all charging okay through usb, but not being detected by Windows in any way.

- Problem occurs on Win7 (64) pc and WinXP laptop.

- All working fine one minute, next stopped working.

- I have made no changes to the system, no settings altered, no software installed.

Any ideas? :confused::confused::confused:

Honestly though does sound strange, have you access to any other machines you could try the flash drive on, and what about doing a hard reset on the iPod Touch and see if Windows picks it up after?

Or better still buy a Mac. ;)

Did a hard reset on the iPod touch, nothing on both machines. Will them all on another pc when I get a chance.

Now then.... just tried a 3rd USB flash drive, this time I get a message bubble at the bottom "USB device not recognised" "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it" It then tries to install device drivers but tells me it failed. Tried this 3rd flash drive in the laptop... exact same problem. Are these 2 ******* computers conspiring against me??!

Also I noticed, in the Action Centre on notification tray its asking me to "install you power management system driver" because a "driver for your power management system is available online" Could this be related to the USB ports? I have downloaded and installed the drivers that it has asked me to "AMD Quiet & Cool" or something?

Have turned Windows Auto update back on and that's downloading some updates. When thats done will restart and see if this fixes or if the above power management driver thing fixes it.

Thanks, the first link, to the Microsoft site, explains the problem. I tried deleting the upper & lower filters in the registry (couldn't find any lower filters?), however on restarting Windows it refused to start up, so had to do a system restore to get it working again. The original poster in that says he managed to fix the problem, but doesn't say how!

Also tried uninstalling on the usb stuff in Device manager, restarted so it reinstalled it all, now lost the use of my mouse?!! Keyboard is still working though.

I'm now backing everything up onto an external hard drive (usb.. works okay) and will format/clean install Win7, hoping this will work. If it doesn't then I really don't know what to do next, other than either replace the motherboard or get one of my air rifles out of the loft!

Reinstalled Win7.... no luck. :(

Could the devices (2 Ipods and 3 usb flash memory sticks) have been damaged by the usb ports?

The mouse is being detected but as an unknown device, it doesnt want to install drivers for it and the red light underneath the mouse goes out after a few seconds of being detected.

aliens gif is perfect lol

could be the ports gone fugly... i got one weird port on my mobo... just dont see usb flash but it sees my wireless keyboard just fine.

No, its just me being an idiot again.

I think I have found the problem. I took my gfx card out the other day as it was a little clogged with dust. I had to move a few cables out of the way (and unplug them) in order to get it out. One of the cables I was was the usb cable that was attached to the motherboard. When I plugged it back in...... I lugged it into the 1394 pins on the mobo :( What a moron!

I've corrected it now, but I think I've frazzled something on most of the usb devices that I've been using since... 3 memory sticks, a mouse, 8gb Ipod Nano (the wifes) and my Ipod touch.
