hello peoples..

Okay.. this is a very strange question to ask, especially on a computer forum.
But i thought id ask here, as i know this forum is good for fast replies, Aswell as the fact that, well, a thousand heads are better than just one...

Okay..

Why does my 11 month daughter always choke when she is feeding?
Normally, towards the end of her milk feed, so like when she gets full up..

You may be thinking like "WTF"??? But let me explain why this is so wierd.

My daughter was born 3 months premature, due to emergency C-section, weighing just 1lb 1...

She was born with a condition called Oesophageal atresia..

in laymans terms.. Her oesophagus (throat) isnt connected to her stomach..

Unlike most people, we swallow food/drink, it goes down our throat and down to our stomach..
My daughter, Is incomplete.. it only goes a little way down, and then there is a gap..
So physically impossible to swallow milk/food..
Instead, she is fed by a gastrostamy.. (an incision directly into her tummy, putting a tube straight into her stomach, in which we syringe milk in every 3 hours, day and night)..

Also causing the in-ability to swallow her own saliva, as it would go nowhere, just fill up the small bit of her oesophagus that she has got, until it stops air going into her lungs, basically suffercating her... So she has a tube coming out the side of her neck to drain that!

SO...

if there is no way for food/milk to go down to her stomach, that means, there is no way for food/milk to come up either
(one positive thing is we dont have to deal with sick)..

So why does she always choke when she is getting full up on milk?
and yes.. its ONLY when its near the end of her milk feed...

Every day/night for the past 5 months of feeding her, every 3 hours via syringe, she chokes near the end...
(yes she is 11 months old, but was in intensive care for the first 6 months of her life, so only had to feed her for 5 months at home)...

I think this is very strange, me and my Mrs cannot seam to understand why this happens..

No milk can go down or up, and neither can gas/air... so that cant be the cause

id like to find out, because, well, if you were awake every 3 hours in the night feeding, and then sat there for even longer stopping her choking.. you'd like to try and establish the cause to :)

cheers

This is a medical thread so is likely to get deleted/locked, but I'd be talking to the gastro team at the hospital and/or your GP/padediatrician if she has one, rather than a bunch of non experts on a forum.

As above thread will get closed.

But concidering i have what would be conciderd a "normal" child and remembering how hard i thought it was dealing with sleepless nights and all associated. To have that + everything your going thru must be really hard work. So can only Wish you all the best with your child and hope you find a solution :)
