Very weird problem with a PC.

My uncle has asked me to fix a desktop PC he was given by his daughter which is not working. It's a socket 775 system and the board is an Asus P5B.

Firstly it wasn't powering on. Sorted that with a new PSU.

Now the weird problem. It had XP installed and for some reason the mouse would not work and I tried several, ps2 and usb. When I say will not work, I'm not able to successfully load a driver in XP; just keep coming up with the Hardware Wizard with which I've tried all the options (find automatically, load from specific location (tried windows/system folders, XP installation disc, downloaded Asus chipset driver folder.

I've reformatted the HD and reinstalled XP (he wants XP OS as he has the retail disc). I've downloaded and installed the latest chipset drivers from the Asus website. I've spent ages updating windows (it's on SP2, not yet installed SP3). I've tried connecting the mouse to both PS2 and USB. No joy whatsoever.

It appears in 'Unknown Devices' in Device Manager. Here's what appears when I click on the properties there:

Unknown Device
Device Type: Other Devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: on Intel(R) ICH8/IC8HR Family LPC Interface

Device Status:
The Drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver

This has got me completely and utterly stumped and I need help please!!!! I've put so much time into this since finishing work today and it will be a shame if I can't get it working.

It didn't work with XP that was on the PC and it has not worked at all with the fresh XP installation. The red lights underneath the mouse come on so it is getting power. As I mentioned, I have tried three difference mice which are all working fine on other PCs. I've also tried the two USB mice in both the PS2 and USB ports.

Forgot to mention, I also cleared CMOS and made checked PS2 Mouse was enabled in the BIOS. I've tried turning Legacy USB both on and off just for sanity but no difference.

tried installing the motherboard chipset drivers? id imagine that it wouldnt work though,a mouse should be detected by windows XP without needing to install anything.......maybe try windows 7? its not as bad as vista and i heard it can run on low amounts of ram if configured properly. TBH it just sounds like its broke to me but keep trying!

This is what I thought very strange. Never had a mouse undetected during an XP installation. Also don't have the option of Windows 7 as he already has an XP disc and I don't he will want to fork out for a new OS. And yes, latest chipset drivers are installed.

However.....

The PSU I swapped the original broken one with has a 4pin connector for the EATX12V but only has a 20 pin for ATXPWR. I was under the impression that it's not a problem to leave the four end sockets empty. I've just bought a 20 to 24 pin converter from ebay to see if that makes any difference.

I've also got another PSU which has a 24 pin plug but doesn't have the 4 pin for the EATX12V! I've ordered a molex to 4 pin to try with this PSU.

I've had enough for tonight though. My brain hurts!! Glad I've got a day off tomorrorow, or should i say, today :p

I've tried both of these adapters with their respective power supplies now and still the same problem :( Any ideas?!!!

You tried any other USB devices on that machine?

I have and now you mention it, getting the pc to recognise USB devices is hit and miss. Sometimes I have to restart the machine before it recognises my flash drive and sometimes it still fails to recognised it after the reboot. The USB keyboard was working the other day and now doesn't seem to power up on reboot. The keyboard works using a USB to PS/2 adapter though.
