Had a quick search through and cannot find a thread on this. Anyone know if there is a noticeable difference between VGA and HDMI ? Read through some articles, the general mood is there isnt much of a difference. Anyone have any experience of the two and which ones better ? Thanks .

Tbh, you won't notice a difference to the naked eye. I tested in my Samsung series 6 37" tv... with resolutions of 1920x1200 and couldn't see a single thing different.

The only obvious difference is that HDMI also carries sound :)

I bet all your TVs are using the highest "sharpness" settings anyway ;):o

VGA without doubt.

I hate HDMI with my PS3.

I compared two games (FIFA) I had on both 360 and PS3 and VGA looked a lot better.

With my TV HDMI tends to give a smoother image and in some cases slightly better colour, but actually spoils some of the details. With VGA the image is noticeably sharper and games can appear more detailed. my first thought is of GTA4, HDMI the objects in the distance are very blurred and lack detail, with VGA although the objects are more jagged, but they are much clearer and have a greater level of detail

Really depends on your screen and it's native resolution..

if you have a 1360x768 res screen then using a 720p settign via HDMI is not going to look as good as a VGA with the res set correctly.

However if you have a 1920x1080 res screen you are very unlikely to see much difference.

I personally prefer VGA as it allows for specific res settings and also allows me to hook it up to monitors and use again the correct resolution to give the best possible image.

very little difference is the tv has a capable vga input and you're using a short lead. HDMI is clearly better when you're using longer cable runs. 10 meters or so and there's no competition at all.

actually on that subject, i run a 10m vga cable from my pc to the monitor on my desk. I recently sold my ati 4830 to fund an upgrade and stuck my trusty nvidia 7300gs in the pc for the mean time....the vga output on that GS is horrific so yes quality also includes the output device. nothing should be sharper than hdmi @ native resolution; if it is then your sharpness is too high.

Pfff, according to my mate VGA isn't a HD cable :P

imo unless you compare it you probably will never notice the difference, just go for the one you have spare or the one which makes most sense, I use VGA on mine because I plough the phono cables straight into my amp, couldn't do that with HDMI.

Tends to depend on the screen you're viewing on really.

Yup, one of my monitors looks ever so slightly 'off' on VGA no reason for it though. Also the TV in the living room is absolutely horrible via HD component (different i know) but DVI its perfect even for a rubbish TV that makes SD quality stuff (DVDs etc) connected via scart look like rubbish pirated camcorder two for a pound down the market crap :p

So yeah they should offer the same quality but some displays/tv just hate certain types.

Overall though given normal circumstances and no need for audio go for VGA as it allows for various resolutions.
