Hello there, So i have this friend with an older machine, it only has VGA output, he just bought a new tv and really wants to hook up his machine to his TV, however the tv only have HDMI input, So after doing a little googling i came across a VGA (male) to HDMI cable, But then i thought hang on... VGA is an analog signal where as HDMI is digital. So how can this possibly work?

What are you thoughts on this guys?

I do not need sound to be played through the tv, So im just after picture, If i get one of these cables is there any chance of it even working?

After doing research it seems you must have one of these Analog - Digital Converter's which are quite expensive, If you do need one of these then what is the point in the cable above? Im at a real loss guys

you can buy a vga/dvi adaptor,all graphic cards come with one,then simply buy a dvi to hdmi lead and job done
 
It's only going to work if digital signal output is supported through the VGA port.

You'd have to find the technical specifications of the VGA output.

I've no idea if this is commonly supported or rarely supported.

He could possibly buy a cheap graphics card with HDMI output depending on what will fit in his motherboard.

ahhh i forgot i used a dvi-i to vga on my old x1950 gpu to a vga monitor not the other way round

yeah would be easier to buy el cheapo hdmi graphic card
 
you can buy cables though,not mentioning competitors but i have seen them vga to hdmi

just read this from one of the cables description

"Cable transmit video signals up to 1024 x 768 pixel resolution" is it worth bothering with one?

You can buy such cables as the OP indicated.

But:

Your Video card must support digital signal output through VGA port function.

And the resolution seems to be limited.

A cheap graphics card with HDMI would seem to be the solution depending on what the OP's friend's PC can accommodate.

I used to run an old Nvidia 7900gt through DVI->HDMI adapter to my TV @ 1080p without any trouble so a card with either DVI or HDMI port will be fine.

You're welcome.

I mentioned checking what graphics cards your friend's motherbaord can accommodate.

Check that it's not so old that it would need an AGP card rather than the PCI-E card linked above.
 
Well after finally retrieving my friends trust to take a proper look it turns out hes already got a Graphics card with VGA and DVI output, i had an a DVI-HDMI adapter from my GTX 260 lieing around so what we did was buy a standard DVI cable just use the DVI output on his card, this worked perfectly, Its not what i would have done personally but its his computer not mine haha :D
