VGA ports and DVI to VGA adaptors

I'm looking to buy a new graphics card, nothing too fancy but something that will keep me busy for a couple of years, but I really need to be sure that I'm getting the best signal going to my CRT monitor. I've got a couple of high quality VGA cables but now I need something to plug them into.

If I went for something like the GeForce 6800 GS that comes with a VGA and a DVI port on board.

If I went for a GeForce 7800 GT that would come with two DVI ports and one or two DVI adaptors.

Obviously the latter has more ooomph than the former, but is the DVI to VGA adaptor that I'd need to screw into the DVI port on the 7800 doing the same job as the VGA port on the 6800 GS? Is there any distinguishable loss of signal quality from using the adaptor?

I have a dual DVI 6600GT and am using it with a DVI-VGA adapter and can't tell a difference between that and, for example, the VGA out on my Ti4800SE or the X800XTPE I had for a while that had native VGA output.

I wasn't running through any special cables etc, but I couldn't tell a difference.

I run at high resolutions using a high quality VGA cable and a DVI-VGA adaptor from my x1800xt and previously on my 7800gtx. and i notice no ghosting or bad image quality

I did notice slightly worse picture quality whenever I had reason to use one of the little dongle adapters (geforce bundled or a belkin one) with my Mitsubishi Diamond Pro CRT. It seemed slightly blurry compared to normal conditions. I later discovered that DVI-I ports on graphics cards have output pins for both analogue and digital output at the same time. Use a DVI-A to VGA cable and there is no conversion going on to spoil things. :)

The dongle is just a pin converter nothing more. The graphics card outputs DVD-I which is DVI-D (digital TFT HDMI etc) + DVI-A (analogue i.e 15 pin dsub). The dongles do vary and the ones supplied with the cards are on the whole carp. I have 3rd party gold plated ones, but that's on a 52" HDTV/Monitor, so you pays yer money.....You're better of with the proper lead.

Can you get such leads from OcUK? I couldn't see one in the cables section.

If not, any idea how much a good one would be?

OK, I've found a LINDY DVI-A to VGA Male Adapter Cable (my CRT has a female socket) for £10.99. It states:

For connecting a computer with a DVI-I output to a VGA monitor!

This high-quality cable allows you to connect a computer with a DVI-I analogue output to a VGA monitor with a 15 Way VGA Female connector (i.e. a monitor with a removable VGA cable).

Many modern graphics cards feature both DVI-I (digital and analogue) and VGA (analogue) connectors. This cable is useful when you want to connect two VGA monitors to a computer equipped with one of these cards - simply connect the first monitor to the VGA port and the second, using this cable, to the DVI port!

Please note: The DVI-A connector used in this cable mates to the analogue pins incorporated in the DVI-I interface to send the analogue signal to the VGA input on your monitor. It does not convert DVI digital signals to VGA analogue!
Sound about right?
