VGA to DVI to HDMI - please help :(

Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move :)

I have an issue....

I need to get a VGA output to a HDMI input via a HDMI to DVI cable

The reason for this is I have a Shuttle XS35V2 with a VGA output. I then have a DVI to HDMI cable going into my TV (HDMI end into the TV).

I can't get a new graphics card because the Shuttle doesn't have room for it. I also can't change the cable because it goes up the wall and it's a task to put a new one in.

What I have tried is the DVI to HDMI cable with a DVI to VGA converter, but that doesn't work because it needs to be a digital signal for the HDMI.

So, how can I convert the analog VGA signal to DVI then to HDMI?

Can I use a VGA to HDMI converter but rather than:

VGA cable > convertor > HDMI cable

I'd need:

VGA cable > converter > basic HDMI converter to DVI > DVI to HDMI cable

Can any one please help?

Unless your TV accepts an anologue input into the HDMI (very unlikely) you can't do this with cables or simple adapters, you need a box to do the conversion. You can get boxes online for around £15 or so, might need to spend more for better quality. Remember though, unless the converter has it built in you would have to run your audio from the computer seperatley if you want it on the TV.

may be better off in graphics cards forum tbh
I'd say it should be fine as DVI is a digital signal the only issue you may have is that HDMI has audio and DVI does not.

Yes, I expect I'll need a conversion box, I just wanted to know if this would work before I buy one.

You will need some sort of active converter to turn the VGA signals into HDMI. It's pretty tricky to find though since having a quick search gives me a HDMI output to a VGA input, but for your use you need it the other way round.

Have you maybe considered USB to HDMI instead? These things do work fine but I remember reading a review it may add more strain to the CPU due to the way the adapter works. Quick check on the rainforest shows a price of about £45 odd.

EDIT: I didn't search hard enough. I found the Winpoon 1080P VGA Audio to HDMI HD HDTV on the rainforest that accepts VGA + 3.5mm audio jack to HDMI for £23.

You can get VGA to HDMI direct. So just VGA > converter > HDMI. Simples. If you get a converter that takes the audio from a 3.5mm jack then you are sorted.

I'm not fussed about the audio as the audio goes else where. I'll have a look at that. Would that work with a HDMI to DVI adapter to convert the HDMI from the converter to the DVI to HDMI cable?

It should work, but why not get a HDMI cable instead just to make the whole thing less complicated?

So something like:

VGA output -> VGA cable -> VGA to HDMI converter -> HDMI cable -> HDMI TV

Instead of:

VGA output -> VGA cable -> VGA to HDMI converter -> HDMI to DVI adapter -> DVI to HDMI cable -> HDMI TV

Check my previous post as well, there is some if you search around.

The cables up the wall to to swap cables involves taking the TV off the wall etc. etc. something I can't be bothered with :D

I'll take a look at the options

EDIT: and thanks btw
