VIC check related fun

recently bought a cheap banger, £200

seller sent off the V5 in the usual way, i have just received a letter from the DVLA stating that they will not issue a V5 until a VIC check has been completed, because it's a cat C write off.

what kind of recourse do i have against the seller? the car's status was never mentioned in the ad, or by the seller

Did you ask about the status?

If not, you are on your own. A private seller need not disclose things like this but must be honest when asked.

arent unresolved cat C's meant to be sold as such though?

It's not really a big deal, it's a 200 quid car and a VIC isn't particularly complex.
