Hey,

Haven't bought a video camera in a long time - this will be used by staff for recording patient walks up and down a corridor. Footage will total 30mins each week and it just being stored on a computer with a 150gb hdd.

So, I need the files to be relatively small, no need for HD. Plus need to be able to manage the recordings from the camera itself, so I can put the patients name on the outputted file (as many will be recorded before being ripped onto the computer).

That's the main use, secondary use is for recording group sessions - think we'll need an external mic. It's only for voices and will be put in the middle of the group (in a circle) with the camera on the outside filming in.

Budget of £300 max for everything, camera + mem cards + mic. Money is coming from donations so cheaper the better! Must be bought by the hopsital also, so can't do second hand.

Any ideas?!

Thanks in advance

Sam

With SD cameras, it will be difficult to get something genuinely bad. You're best off looking on the internet for a camera that has the specific features you need (external mic jack, etc.).

Anything from Sony, Canon, JVC and suchlike will be fine.

If you're looking for quality, make sure it's got a CMOS with at least 2mp

I made the mistake of buying a Canon with 80gb hard drive with a 0.8mp, and was disappointed the with quality

I've only looked at HD cameras so havent got any recommendations to share

but the way i shop is to go find a site to buy the camera from, look at how much you have to spend then find one that does most of what you want

then google for that product and find a review of it and see if its any good. Theres tons of review sites on the net that will help your decision.

Very subjective.

As I said, anything from the 'major' brands will be fine, it's just a question of determining which matches your particular requirements best.

The argument between CMOS vs. CCD will rage until there is a defined performance difference between the systems as each has its own particular quirks and benefits.

I know a lot about HD video cameras, but not SD, and so can't recommend anything specific.

I DO know, however, that you should be able to get everything you want for a lot less than your budget cap.

Thank's a lot, I'll take a look around and see what matches spec.

Just seems like I can pick up a HD vcamera for the same expense as a standard def. Guess it's caused by the lack of active competition in the market now..

Cheers. S

I think it would be a good idea to brief them, as you will be storing patient videos / conversations, and I would think there are policies in place in your trust for encryption etc.

Think of it this way, you record a big group session and then the camera/mem card gets nicked....

Ah right.. we have consent forms signed by each patient thanks. And another if we require the video for use in educational meetings.

It's part of a 4 week course on campus. So I'm sure it's covered suficiently else where also. Thanks for the concern.
