Video Conversion and Trimming

Hi there,

I have many Video files from ages ago, that i recorded with my mediocre TV software. These files were saved as hefty MPG files, and for some reason, the time stamps are all incorrect.
eg 1 hour show is shown as 12 minutes etc. This prevents proper time skipping and Rwd FFwd.
Does anyone know if this is a quickly resolvable issue? i have had reasonable success in recoding these to avi's, which seems to restore their true lengths, but knowing exactly what caused these issues would be nice.

I want to recode these massive MPG files to smaller AVI's, as well as trim the ad's etc. I'm looking for a decent set of softwares, (in one Suite, or separately) that can convert lots of movie formats (mpg, avi, divx etc) into lots of others (avi, mpg, xvid etc).
I have used a plethora of softwares that claim to do these things, but i am usually let down by, the lack of support of certain format-to-format conversions, or rubbish interfaces etc.

I have briefly used solutions such as AVI MPEG Converter or #1 Video Converter, but im looking more for a reliable, trusty branded Solution. Im not up to date with my knowledge of Video Editing brands - do Pinnacle offer good solutions?

I also want a professional video trimming tool that will allow me to conveniently trim accurate segments from my movie files (such as commercial breaks). Ideally, i would like to join the selected segments into one remaining movie file in one operation.
Does River Past's Vide Slice with its "discontinuous multiple segments" feature enable this?

I have upto now, resorted to Splitting the movie into segments, to remove commercials, and then join the 5 or more segments into one coherent video file.
Im sure there are trusted solutions that can trim and merge selections into one file, all in one go.

One Movie suite with awesome features would be an ideal solution.

Your advice, suggestions or opinions on these sevarl issues are well respected, ;)
Regards,
Wilf

Virtual dub will do what you want for free. No point in a video editing package just to cut out parts of the video and re-encode.
