Video Conversion Software

Hi Guys,

Im looking for a free video convertor.
Ive googled but all the websites seem dodgy to me.
Basically I want to convert .mkv to something I can use on an older dvd player that does not support .mkv, I can get the picture but no sound.
I used to have a copy of ConvertXtoDvD 4 but its gone missing and I don't want to pay for another in case it turns up.

Any suggestions would be great.

how will it effect the picture quality? everything I want to convert is in 720p.

how about Freemake video converter. I've used it for lots of stuff off my NAS that was in MKV/MP4 to DVD and they were fine.
